Perennial herb in the Mint Family well-loved by cats for its stimulating effects. For humans, it is a mild sedative. Also attracts bees and other pollinators.
Sow in spring directly into the garden or into nursery pots. Regular garden soil is sufficient. Fairly drought-tolerant, though it will respond to irrigation.
First year remains compact, 6-18″ high. Starts blooming the second year, and can reach heights of 5-6 feet. Foliage grey-green to green, stems square and purplish, flowers white to lavender with speckles.
Harvest when about half the buds have opened. You can take 2/3-3/4 of each flowering stem.
Pro-Tip: For bigger autumn harvests, pinch off the leafy tips 2-4 times over the spring and summer before budding starts. This causes the stems to double, increasing the number of flowering tops.
